Getting crafty

So, Hyrum has been bugging me for years to get a sewing machine. I always told him, "What would I do with a sewing maching, I don't know how to sew." Almost a year ago, he just brought one home that he got for $20. It's been sitting in our closet ever since. A few weeks ago, he saw fleece scraps on the free section of craigslist and went and picked them up. I looked up some ideas that I could make with them, and I am officially obsessed with making things. I had to call my brother-in-law's girlfriend to learn how to thread the bobbin, and google helped me a few other things. I've learned how to hand stitch an opening closed so you can't see it, how to adjust tension, and that you are supposed to get a new needle fairly often. I have lots to learn still, but it's so fun!

The scraps that we got
The first thing I made, a soaker (translation: diaper cover, and yes, it really works awesome). BTW, the patterns I used came from here

And then I made anotherAnd then some longies (which are just pants that double as a diaper cover, so they are made out of fleece or wool)

and then a little blanket

a soft block, which she loves way more than I expected
and some mittens for little cousin Max. I also made Claire some mitten liners because her mittens aren't warm enough, and I'm in the process of making her some boot liners.
She has 2 of these now, though they didn't come with the free fleece, we got them from the remnants section at the fabric store for super cheap.
And I still have enough to make another pair of longies, a pair a shorties, a hat, a scarf, and a few toys (maybe some more blocks or balls). And it was all free! I have a whole list of things that I want make now (I won't let Hyrum throw away his old shirts anymore). I love it!
